The Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency-Based Education (CBE) are Kenya's transformative education reforms introduced in 2017 to replace the traditional 8-4-4 system. This new framework focuses on developing practical skills, competencies, and values rather than rote memorization and exam performance.

CBC (Competency-Based Curriculum) and CBE (Competency-Based Education) are terms used to describe Kenya's modern approach to learning. Designed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), the curriculum shifts focus from what learners know to what they can do with what they know. It emphasizes seven core competencies: communication and collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and imagination, citizenship, digital literacy, learning to learn, and self-efficacy.
Pre-Primary (PP1 & PP2) and Lower Primary (Grades 1-3). Focus on foundational literacy, numeracy, and psychosocial skills. Learners are introduced to basic competencies through play-based learning.
Upper Primary (Grades 4-6) and Junior Secondary (Grades 7-9). Learners explore broader subjects and begin to develop specialized interests. Assessment focuses on practical demonstrations of competence.
Senior Secondary (Grades 10-12). Students specialize in pathways: Arts & Sports, Science & Technology, or Social Sciences. This prepares them for higher education, TVET, or the workforce.
1. Communication and Collaboration - Expressing ideas effectively and working well with others.
2. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving - Analysing situations and finding creative solutions.
3. Creativity and Imagination - Thinking outside the box and generating innovative ideas.
4. Citizenship - Understanding rights, responsibilities and contributing to society.
5. Digital Literacy - Using technology effectively and responsibly.
6. Learning to Learn - Developing independent study skills and a love for lifelong learning.
7. Self-Efficacy - Building confidence, resilience and a positive self-image.

The 8-4-4 system heavily relied on summative examinations (KCPE, KCSE) to determine a learner's future. This created a high-stakes, exam-oriented culture where success was measured by grades rather than skills. CBC/CBE was introduced to:
• Develop holistic learners with practical skills for the 21st century
• Reduce exam-related stress and anxiety among students
• Identify and nurture each learner's unique talents and abilities
• Prepare students for diverse career pathways including TVET
• Align Kenya's education with global standards
• Encourage parental and community involvement in education
